Zip Me Up

Clean zips. No Mac cruft.

Drop files or folders on Zip Me Up and get a .zip that’s ready to send to people on Windows and Linux, without the .DS_Store files, __MACOSX folders, ._ files and extended attributes a Mac usually adds.

What it does

What Zip Me Up does

One window with a big drop zone. Zipping starts as soon as you drop, and each drop shows its progress and result.

  • Drop to zip

Drop files and folders on the window. Each drop gets a row that shows it queued, zipping, done (with the archive’s name and size), failed or cancelled.

  • Mac metadata stripped

Removes ._ AppleDouble files, .DS_Store files and extended attributes before zipping, and leaves out any .DS_Store, __MACOSX or ._ files that remain, at any depth.

  • Your originals stay untouched

Safe mode, the default, cleans a temporary copy. Fast mode, an option in Settings, cleans the source in place to save time and disk space.

  • Several items, one Archive.zip

A single item keeps its name (Report.pdf becomes Report.zip). Several items dropped together make one Archive.zip, like Archive Utility. Existing files are never overwritten.

  • Progress, cancel, Show in Finder

Watch the file count as it zips, cancel a zip to stop it and delete the partial archive, and jump to finished zips in Finder. The last 5 archives stay listed between launches.

  • Settings

Choose Safe or Fast mode, save zips next to the source or in a folder you pick, and keep symbolic links as links if you need them.

Planned Password-protected zips (planned, waiting on a limitation of the system zip tool)

Under the hood

macOS’s own tools, nothing else

  • No bundled tools. Zip Me Up uses the zip, xattr and dot_clean tools that ship with macOS, with no third-party code.
  • Fully local. There’s no networking code at all: no analytics and no update checks. Settings and the list of recent archives stay on your Mac.
  • No permissions declared. Zip Me Up works on the files you drag onto it.
Replaces YemuZip

Coming from YemuZip?

YemuZip is no longer developed. Zip Me Up is our modern replacement for it, built natively for Apple silicon: drop your files, get a clean zip.

Zip Me Up only makes .zip archives. It doesn’t open or extract them.

Your first zip
  1. Drop files or folders on the Zip Me Up window.
  2. Watch it zip in its row, or cancel it.
  3. Click Show in Finder to find the zip next to the original.
