Zip Me Up

Frequently asked questions

Quick answers about what Zip Me Up removes, what happens to your files, where zips go, and which Macs it runs on.

Zipping

What goes into a zip, and where it ends up.

What does it remove?

.DS_Store files, __MACOSX folders, ._ AppleDouble files (resource forks) and extended attributes. They’re removed before zipping, and the zip leaves out any that remain, at any folder depth.

Will it change my original files?

Not by default. Safe mode, the default, copies your files to a temporary folder and cleans the copy. Fast mode, which you turn on in Settings, cleans the original in place.

What happens when I drop several items at once?

They go into one archive named Archive.zip next to the first item, the same as Archive Utility. For separate archives, drop items one at a time.

Where are zips saved?

Next to the source by default, or in a folder you choose in Settings. Existing files are never overwritten: -1, -2 and so on are added to the name.

Can it make password-protected zips?

Not yet. It’s planned, but blocked for now by a limitation of the zip tool that comes with macOS.

Can it open or extract zips, or make other formats?

No. Zip Me Up only creates .zip archives. Use Archive Utility to extract them.

Requirements and privacy

Which Macs it runs on, and what it does with your files.

Does it run on Intel Macs?

No. Zip Me Up is built for Apple silicon only and needs macOS 14 Sonoma or later.

Does it need any permissions?

None are declared. Zip Me Up works on the files you drag onto it, using the zip, xattr and dot_clean tools that come with macOS.

Does it send anything online?

No. Zip Me Up has no networking code: no analytics and no update checks. Its settings and the list of recent archives (file paths only) stay on your Mac.

How do I get Zip Me Up?

Zip Me Up is in beta. Leave your email under Join the beta and we’ll send you a download link as soon as there’s a beta build for you to try.
