Frequently asked questions
Quick answers about what Rewrap costs, which files it handles, switching from MP4tools and the open-source software inside it.
Basics
Price, requirements and the beta.
How much does Rewrap cost?
Rewrap is free.
Which Macs does Rewrap run on?
Macs with Apple silicon, running macOS 14 or later. There’s no Intel version.
How do I get Rewrap?
Rewrap is in beta. Leave your email with Join the beta and we’ll send you a download link as soon as there’s a beta build for you to try.
Do I need Homebrew or FFmpeg?
No. FFmpeg, x264, x265 and libass are built into the app and signed with it. There’s nothing else to install.
Does Rewrap collect any data?
No. Rewrap makes no network calls, and its FFmpeg is built to read and write local files only. Logs and presets stay on your Mac.
Files and formats
What goes in, what comes out, and what’s kept.
Which files can Rewrap open?
Common video files: MKV, MP4, M4V, MOV, AVI, TS, M2TS, VOB, WebM and OGM. These are also the types the watch folder picks up.
What does Rewrap make?
MP4 or M4V files, tagged as a movie, TV show, music, music video, audiobook or home video.
Will my video lose quality?
Not when it’s copied. H.264 and HEVC video and AAC, AC3, E-AC3 and ALAC audio are copied into the new file untouched. Only streams that MP4 can’t hold, or that you choose to convert, are re-encoded. See When Rewrap copies and when it converts.
Does Rewrap keep chapters and cover art?
Yes, always. Chapters, metadata and attached cover art are copied into every file Rewrap makes.
Does the Device setting change the conversion?
Not yet. For now, choose a preset such as Apple TV 4K, iPhone or iPad. Deciding what to copy based on the target device is planned.
Switching and open source
Coming from MP4tools, and the GPL software inside Rewrap.
I use MP4tools. Why switch?
MP4tools was last updated in 2019 and is built for Intel Macs, so it runs on Apple silicon only through Rosetta 2. Rewrap is a new app, written from scratch for Apple silicon, for the same job, and it adds HEVC as a conversion target. It shares no code with MP4tools, and there are no settings to import.
Where is the source code for FFmpeg?
Rewrap includes FFmpeg, x264 and x265 under the GNU General Public License. The licenses and the matching source code for each release are listed on the licenses page.
A conversion failed. What should I send you?
Each job has its own log. Choose Reveal Logs in Finder from the menu and attach that job’s log to a support ticket, with the file’s format if you know it.
