Everything Rewrap does
Rewrap inspects, remuxes and converts video into MP4 and M4V files for Apple devices, copying streams through untouched whenever it can.
See every track before you convert
Drop or open files and Rewrap lists every video, audio and subtitle track in one table, filtered by type. Each row shows the codec and the source bitrate, and you choose what goes into the output.
- Turn any track on or off
- Set a track’s title and fix its language; the change carries into the output
- Track Selection rules: choose tracks by hand, take the first of each type, or take them all
Remux without re-encoding
Compatible streams are copied into the new file as they are: fast, and with no loss in quality. Only a stream that MP4 can’t hold is converted, to HEVC video or AAC 5.1 audio by default.
- Video: H.264 and HEVC
- Audio: AAC, AC3, E-AC3 and ALAC
- Subtitles: SRT, MP4 text and WebVTT
- Chapters, metadata and cover art are always kept
- HEVC video
- Copied
- AC3 5.1 audio
- Copied
- SRT subtitles
- Converted to MP4 text
- Chapters and artwork
- Kept
H.264 and HEVC, fast or careful
When a video does need converting, choose the Mac’s hardware encoder for speed, or the x264 and x265 software encoders for quality, in one pass or two. Leave the bitrate on automatic or set your own, and resize to a width if you need a smaller file.
- Hardware encoding with VideoToolbox
- Software encoding with x264 and x265, one or two passes
- Automatic or fixed bitrate, and optional resizing
More than one audio track, if you like
Keep the original soundtrack and add a stereo version for devices that need one. Rewrap can write any combination of the original, AAC stereo, AAC 5.1, AC3 stereo and AC3 5.1 into the same file.
- Original (passthrough)
- AAC stereo
- AAC 5.1
- AC3 stereo
- AC3 5.1
Pick as many as you want in one file.
Subtitles you can switch, or burn in
Add subtitles as tracks you can turn on and off, with their language and default and forced flags. Subtitle files next to the video are picked up on their own, and you can drop more onto a loaded video. Or burn subtitles into the picture, including Blu-ray and DVD image subtitles.
- Finds movie.srt and movie.en.srt next to movie.mkv
- Drop SRT, ASS, SSA or WebVTT files onto a loaded video
- Burn in styled text subtitles or Blu-ray and DVD subtitles
The small things that add up
-
Presets
Passthru Remux, Apple TV 4K (Fast and Quality), iPhone, iPad and Archive H.265, plus presets of your own.
-
Batch queue
Convert many files at once. The jobs drawer shows progress and time left, with Cancel, Clear Done and Reveal in Finder.
-
Watch folder
Choose a folder and Rewrap queues new videos as they appear, waiting until each one has finished copying.
-
Split, join and extract
Cut a file by time, join files with matching codecs, or pull tracks out into their own files. None of it re-encodes.
-
Save anywhere
Send finished files to any folder, external drives included. Each job keeps a log you can open from the menu.
-
Nothing else to install
FFmpeg, x264, x265 and libass are built in and signed with the app. No Homebrew, no Terminal.
-
No network access
Rewrap makes no network calls, and its FFmpeg is built to read and write files only.
-
Signed and notarized
Developer ID signed with the hardened runtime and notarized by Apple.
-
Open-source engine
FFmpeg, x264 and x265 are GPL software. Their licenses and source code are on the licenses page.

Coming from MP4tools?
Rewrap covers the everyday conversions MP4tools is used for, natively on Apple silicon, and adds HEVC as a conversion target. There are no settings to import: open your files and pick a preset.
Rewrap is a new app and shares no code with MP4tools.
- Drop your videos onto the Rewrap window.
- Check the tracks and pick a preset such as Passthru Remux.
- Convert and find the MP4 where you chose to save it.
MP4tools is a trademark of its respective owner. Rewrap is independent and is not affiliated with or endorsed by its owner.
